Also known as the Postgraduate Seminar, it is an annual academic event, organized since 2023 by the postgraduate students at the Institute of Economics of the University of Campinas (IE-Unicamp), together with the coordinators of both IE’s stricto sensu Postgraduate Programs: the one in Economics and the other in Economic Development. Find out more in "About".
The aim of the event is to promote the sharing and discussion of the research in Economics and in Economic Development carried out by postgraduate students, regardless of the stage they are at. They may be beginning or already completed; they may be projects or already have results (preliminary or final); they may have already been presented/submitted/published or not, etc. The idea is for the seminar to be an opportunity for these works to be presented and discussed collectively, encouraging interaction between students from both IE’s stricto sensu Postgraduate Programs, and between them and professors, researchers, and other students from inside and – whenever possible – outside the institute.
At the beginning of the second semester, all IE Master's and PhD students receive an invitation via their institutional email addresses to join the Scientific and Organizing Commission of the seminar to be held that year. This commission is also made up of the coordinators of the institute's Postgraduate Programs in Economics and in Economic Development, and usually starts its activities in August. Call for abstract usually open in August or September, and the seminar usually takes place each year, in October/November, at IE itself.
For now, it's a 100% in-person event.
Presentations, discussions, lectures, and other seminar activities are normally conducted in Portuguese, without simultaneous translation. Exceptions may be considered, especially for foreign postgraduate students who request in advance that their presentations be made in other languages, such as English or Spanish. Such requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Scientific and Organizing Commission of the seminar to be held that year.
The seminar is usually announced in August/September. You can find out about the current year's edition (date, program, etc.) and the call for abstracts (deadline, form, etc.) by following the event's website or Instagram, or by subscribing to its mailing list. If you're a postgraduate student at IE, also keep an eye on your Unicamp email and the institute's WhatsApp groups: every year you'll receive all the information about the seminar, as well as the invitation to join the Scientific and Organizing Commission, via these institutional channels.
There are two ways to participate: as a presenter (presenting your research at one of the seminar's tables) or as an audience (attending tables, lectures, and other activities at the event). To participate as an audience, there is no need to register in advance. The Postgraduate Research Seminar is a public event, free of charge and open to the entire IE community (undergraduates, postgraduates, professors, researchers, and staff) and the general public (from Unicamp and out). To participate as a presenter, however, you must be a Master's or PhD student regularly enrolled at IE. Whenever possible, postgraduate students from other higher education institutions can also apply to come to the seminar and present their work, in order to stimulate the exchange of ideas and research interests, as well as critical thinking in the areas of Economics and Economic Development.
Yes, if places are open for external presenters, the seminar can cover their transportation and accommodation costs, if requested. The availability of funds for this can vary from year to year; check the conditions in the "Application" section.
Yes. However, the number of places for external presenters is limited and may vary from one year to the next, depending on the funding conditions obtained. Check in the "Application" section if the current call includes places for external presenters. To be considered, the work in question just needs to be in line with at least 1 of the 25 lines of research of IE's Postgraduate Programs in Economic Development and in Economics. Research work in different formats will be accepted, such as research projects; chapters of dissertations or theses; papers delivered and/or presented in disciplines; articles, essays, and other papers, even if they have already been published, submitted and/or presented at other events.
No. You don't need a full text to submit your work. Simply submit a summary of your research of up to 500 words using the application form, fill it in and send it in by the deadline. If your work is selected, you will be invited to give a 15-20-minute presentation in person at one of the seminar tables.
Yes, but bear in mind that it is unlikely that more than one paper will be selected per presenter. The seminar aims to offer as many postgraduate students as possible the chance to have their research work presented and discussed.
Yes, but don't forget to indicate the co-authors of the work on the application form.
Yes. All those who present their research work at the seminar will receive a certificate of participation.
No. The seminar does not produce reports, annals, or other types of publication with the research presented, not least because it may still be in progress or at the project stage. Remember that the aim of the event is to promote the sharing and discussion of the research in Economics and in Economic Development carried out by postgraduate students, regardless of the stage they are at. They may be beginning or already completed; they may be projects or already have results (preliminary or final); they may have already been presented/submitted/published or not, etc. The idea is for the seminar to be an opportunity for these works to be presented and discussed collectively, encouraging interaction between students from both of IE's stricto sensu Postgraduate Programs, and between them and professors, researchers, and other students from inside and – whenever possible – outside the institute.
