Due to structural reasons, but also to the economic crises, the situation of the labour market is very sensitive in many countries of the world. In the framework of the BRICS Network University, the Institute of Economics and the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) have organized a Workshop to discuss the labour market in BRICS countries. The workshop has gathered together specialists on the labour market from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

In the first panel, Prof. Anselmo Santos (Unicamp) presented an overview of the Brazilian labour market; Prof. Sávio Cavalcante discussed the reform of the labour market in Brazil; and Ms. Vera Gers Dimitrov has talked about the impacts of the new Immigration Law over the immigrant workers. In the second panel, Prof. Marina Khramova and Prof. Sergei Ryasantsev (both from the MGIMO University - Moscow and the Institute of Socio-Political Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences) have presented complete data regarding the Russian labour market and the situation of Russian immigrants worldwide. In the next three sessions, Mr. Cheng Li (Unicamp), Prof. J. Praveen (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) and Prof. Nicolàs Pons-Vignon (Wits University, Johannesburg) have discussed about the labour market respectively in China, India and South Africa. At the end, Prof. Hugo Dias (Unicamp) raised some final remarks above the main topics presented.

The workshop has therefore developed rich discussions about informality, unemployment, precarious jobs, inequality, demography and immigration. The situation of the labour market is quite different in the five countries and the discussions have highlighted some common and some specific challenges for BRICS.
